The strongest link that holds the Angels‘ chain together might just be one of the quietest players in the clubhouse.

Galarraga Helps Tigers Avoid Sweep From Angels

Armando Galarraga came within two outs of his first complete game and shutout in the majors, Marcus Thames hit two homers and the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-2 on Wednesday night to avoid a three-game sweep.

Galarraga (4-2) struck out three and walked three while improving his road record to 4-1 in five starts. The right-hander did not allow a runner past first base until the ninth, when he walked Reggie Willits with one out and Maicer Izturis followed with a home run on the right-hander’s 104th and final pitch. Todd Jones finished up.

Guillen outburst caps rough night for Royals (AP)
Losing is nothing new for the Royals. Neither is Jose Guillen speaking his mind. Angels Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Angels offense has slowed to a trickle this month.

In April, the Angels batted .279 as a team, hit 28 home runs in 29 games and were among the league leaders in runs scored with 140 (an average of 4.8 per game).

But in 26 games this month, those numbers have taken a serious dive—a .225 team batting average, 19 home runs and 94 runs scored (3.6 per game). Their slugging percentage has gone from .427 in April to .342 in May, their on-base percentage from .339 to .297.

The slump has been most pronounced in the past nine games. The Angels are batting just .179 (52-for-290) with 23 runs scored (2.6 per game) in their past nine games.

“The offense has to get back on track at some point,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
