Early this season, there was no role for reserve outfielder Reggie Willits, so the Angels sent him to Class AAA Salt Lake to get some playing time.

Their might be a role for him now.

Willits was recalled by the Angels after the game Thursday and was in the starting lineup Friday night, playing left field and batting second behind Chone Figgins in the Angels‘ lineup.

Gary Matthews Jr. has struggled in the No. 2 spot. Though he had driven in a team-leading 20 runs before Friday’s game, Matthews was batting only .229 with a .303 on-base percentage in 30 games. He is just 15 for 79 (.190) in the past 20 games before Friday’s benching.

Scioscia said Matthews “hasn’t lost his two-hole job” despite the slump and Friday’s benching.
